Background

SNMIC has been encouraging the Southern Nevada Workforce Investment Board (known as Workforce Connections) to address the ongoing health care workforce shortage issues.  After the three task forces (recruitment, retention and education) that focus on workforce met in July 2009, we presented our findings and a request to Workforce Connections to consider the creation of a Registered Nurse Internship Program.  Katherine Cylke made several presentations to the Adult & Dislocated Workers (ADW) Committee, as well as the Board of Directors.  We proposed the program utilize on-the-job (OJT) training funds to assist in the orientation process of new grads of local nursing schools.  The OJT program can pay up to 50-90% of wages for the 90 day orientation process.

On Friday, July 9, 2010, Workforce Connections released a request for proposals (RFP) for “Career Advancement and Retention in Healthcare & Healthcare Information Technology” (CARHHIT).  SNMIC will refresh to this as the “carrot grant.”. The grant application is due back to Workforce Connections on August 13, 2010.

SNMIC will form a collaborative group, made up of members of the various task forces to submit a winning proposal to secure this grant. A Grants Advisory Committee will work collaboratively on preparing and delivering the final grant application.  If you wish to be part of this committee, please notify Doug Geinzer (email Doug[at]SNMIC.com – please replace the “@” prior to sending an email.  This is used to avert unneccessary spam.

During this process, we will publish our various strategies and processes for review, critique and comment.  In order to publicly comment on the website, you will need to be a registered user.  You can register here.  We encourage candid comment and feedback as this will assist us in writing a grant application inclusive of the industry needs.
